Apparently the instructor is quite of a scholar with a certain ambition to bring upon something in class, however right from the first lecture he either prepared insufficiently (or due to very problematic presentation) and the effectiveness of the delivery is disastrous, in particular when this is the 4th semester he was in charge of the course. There is a certain value (as comments from below has suggested) to attend this course without a single doubt, but expect that you pretty much have to work on your own (or off-class at least if you are trying to learn extra from the lecturer) and attending the lectures would be of doubtful importance apart from the guest lecture and the question brainstorming session.
(Actually I chose the course for 2015/16 Sem B but apparently the website did not offer such an option and so I just randomly select one of the provided)

Yum對呢個course擺左好多心機 睇得出佢好有心想design一個 inspiring,free,與眾不同的course,不過講同做始終兩件事,例如,Yun想好free但最尾某d部分for example class schedule 反而free得制有d散亂
反思部分我覺得無我想像中咁inspiring,只是不斷好superficial(not theory-based discussion)咁討論一d controversial 既topic,到最後你腦海中只會有一大堆問號但又總結吾出d咩咁。
功課我個人認為好輕鬆,份journal雖然做左幾耐下但做完真係有好好既反思
有人覺得上堂講既野好悶但我個人就好中意,係一d鮮為 知既小故事/冷知識,好正。
簡單講你一定要自己肯思考上堂吾怕同人討論就一定會學到野。

le科講好多對生命嘅反思,如果你個人好中意諗野,le黎會啱你
功作量其實唔算好大
1. lecture
上堂唔take attendence,聽下唔同故仔,有時有guest lecture,topic都好多元化
2. tutorial
都係唔take attendence,主要都係傾下計做下presentation咁
3. presentation x2
第一個係電影嘅present,反思性多。第二個係guest lecture present,資料性多。
4. journal x13
只要唔好留到最尾做,workload唔會好大。professor好好,延遲deadline。journal形式唔限,作首歌又得,畫畫都得

我係 Year 1 Science 學生 , 初初唔識 Reg GE , 結果誤打誤撞就讀咗呢科

功課:

weekly journals x 13 (我每堂寫了約200字, 最緊要思想要跳出框框,千祈唔好hea寫hea report)

Interview journal x 1 (訪問 Guest Speaker,最好有做notes 或錄音,當自己係記者,花小小心思排版就最好)

exam x 1 (可以唔駛點溫書,花少少時間睇下學過咩,諗下嘢就得)

presentation x 2 (訪問speaker問題, 電影 , 都係個句,唔hea諗或者hea pre 都唔會太衰)

結論:

1.縱使呢科係理科科目 , 但好似更適合修讀文科的學生 (有關科學的內容不多)

2.呢一科唔係想你學到d乜有用知識 , 而係學習懂得"反思人生" (e.g. 讀大學=hea?)

3.值得向大家推介 , 但前提係 ***你自己唔好抱住 "HEA" 嘅心態去讀呢一科***

我見到有人留言話係Lee一科到學到野, 我真係好想知你學到D咩野?= =
lecture上足堂,堂堂聽佢廢up. 個course outline同個course實際教ge野根本完全唔一樣. (正確D黎講,應該係Lee個course根本無教過任何實質ge野)
Tutorial presentations根本為做而做, 對學生任何好處都無. 有一堂guest lecture仲要全部人等左成30 mins都無人黎上堂.

我絕對唔係因為我係lee個course拎唔到A grade所以先留言, 而係因為我認為lee一個course將會係我直至大學畢業讀過最無用,最曬時間,最唔知做緊D咩野 ge一個course所以先留言.

總括黎講, 千奇唔好reg lee一科!!!!!!!!!!!!!

真心,讀過其他area 嘅GE 差唔多最後先take 呢個,呢科算係唔錯
如果你係想多勞多得大堆頭式寫作,然後拎A range, sorry 呢科真係唔岩你
如果你真心想學到嘢,對人生諗得深入啲,又唔想太辛苦,呢科就好岩你,
特別係文科人
呢科無科學底都可以讀得好
因為係要講求思考

最初對呢科個grade都無咩期望
但係因為個lecturer幾nice 幾有heart所以先繼續讀呢科
佢都講明實有人好grade實有人爛grade
其實呢科真係好睇你花幾多心機去諗同做啲work

work load唔多,上堂都唔take attendance
佢講明,你覺得生命有更重要做嘅嘢
你就即管去
雨傘革命個排好多人罷課
佢繼續教,但同時講明有make up class(雖然佢太遲通知,所以我就唔到時間去)
大部分都係講故仔,係有幾堂啲嘢會悶啲科學啲

tutorial 好輕鬆,你肯返,帶埋姨媽姑姐叔伯兄弟男女朋友黎都得,
其實主要都係簡單present 同傾下計

功課唔多
兩個present
第一個present 套戲,但千祈唔好hea
好好諗下有咩觀點值得討論
yun好好人,會體諒多first year,所以可以pre兩次
第一次不妨大膽pre,用唔同形式試下

第二個諗同pre訪問speaker問題
都係個句,唔hea諗或者hea pre 都唔會太衰,但小心表達不當,比人感覺唔尊重,會比人圍插(但ar yun 會打圓場)

功課兩份,
一份訪問,都係speaker 啲嘢黎,有做notes ,有錄音唔難做,真係當自己記者,花小小心思排版

另一份reflective journal,
13week 每week做一樣嘢,咩形式都得,唱歌畫畫影相寫字咩都得,yun會比以前example你睇,都係個句,花啲心思,唔好hea寫hea report 返做過咩,比啲個人觀點感受,比啲創意 基本上唔難做

考試仲爽歪歪,都係唔駛點讀書,花少少時間睇下學過咩,諗下嘢就得~

呢科你真係好難估grade,但你會讀得好舒服同埋聽到好多有趣故仔
遇到啲都有諗法嘅groupmate仲會更正
(但present 因為有限時間,所以好多人乘機free ride, 但驚死ar yun 唔知囉==)

你睇其他cm 會見到今年發生左小小意外,就係有堂lecture 因為lecturer 溝通亂咗無左,但事後佢都誠心say 左sorry,send 左超長email解釋返+當日本身lecture 嘅ppt, 至於 tutorial,睇清楚course book邊啲要返,唔係lecturer 下下都要send email 提唔駛返架,大個仔,自己識睇;)

ar yun係超好人,訪問個份你可以無限send draft 比佢睇同比cm(但我無)
同埋佢會因應學生workload 調節交功課deadline

p.s.無歧視,但平時坐喺某啲長者學生隔離聽佢地傾嘢都覺得有啲難相處,可能係諗法唔同啦:)

如果你唔係太在意一定要拎A range ,呢科係幾好玩

這科是一個伏。
內容是挺有趣和inspiring的,尤其是guest lecture找社工分享。
不過到grade,這是個伏。
(sorry因為忍了好久,所以下面好長)

首先workload, 輕鬆之選? 抱歉不是。
1. weekly journals x 13
這個由於中間上堂週數亂了(改了),你想每週寫最後都會一次過作4,5篇,偏偏他要求是有反思,reflection,最好還有further research。
簡言是要作文,長還要有深度。雖然中英文寫也可以,你不寫字畫13幅畫、作13首曲也可以,但自認自己作文不好,只是會直述graph和分析data的就不要選。

2. interview paper x 1
這個更難。這interview是要你當自己是記者寫一篇英、文的文章。內容是guest lecture。
Guest lecture是形式是先有同學在之前brainstorm問題,再在tutorial present 你組想的問題,然後dr lam 記下給全course同學投票(你send email給他,告訴他問題的no.)
Guest lecture 簡稱必答大會,dr lam問完學生投票的問題,社工可能還有其他更深入的分享。
整個lecture 2-3小時,又不讓你考Listening般人問甚麼答甚麼全部照譯一次英文,還要加個人感受。
如果你是理科想着選個area 3 會易handle d,這會是災難。

3. exam x 1
叫你自己design a new ge course, topic 可能是 love, sex, freedom 之類如death的抽象字眼。如果你要考你想點準備? (btw我最後放棄了,沒準備考試)

4. presentation x 2 (一次關於電影,一次是brainstorm questions)
這個比較易,因為有整組7-8個人一起做。present 時間有限制,你可能不用自己present都得。

然後是教法。一大堆多圖片和故事的Lecture,喜歡聽故事受啟發最適合。
到底學了甚麼,請在每堂後自己領會。(請的guest professor都習慣在開頭有個Learning outcome之類的slide告訴你會學到甚麼,dr lam 就沒有。)

另外,這course的編排也滿自由,也因此亂。
present 可以因為同學太忙取消,堂也可以因為professor之間溝通不足,各自以為對方在上堂而取消。這位professor以為是下星期才上,那位自己改了就沒通知同學。最起碼不是經course announcement 通知,send 個email都好呀...
我因為有其他功課,所以呆坐那次也不是在浪費時間,不過有些長者學生那堂就好生氣,一直在罵。

總之,這科就是一個伏。

workload不算多,但個個都係大伏。Dr. Lam好希望我地係assignment 到表現到critical thinking,但佢上堂就機乎冇教過書。成個sem佢都冇出過lecture notes,堂堂都係到free style今吹水。成個course最有用就係佢請其他lecturer黎教嘅堂。Dr. Lam對呢個course有好大理想,但佢衰在懶。成個sem我send過幾次email問佢野,佢一次都冇覆過。都算。最嬲係佢自己取消咗啲tutorial 同lecture但佢唔會事先通知!有次佢取消咗堂lecture但冇講,搞到成班係lecture hall 到呆坐咗半粒鐘先知。成班都對佢冇物好評價,由奇係班上嘅長者學生。總括而言,想爛grade中大伏就reg 呢科拉!

My name is Yun and I am the instructor of this course. Last year has been the second time I taught this course, and once again, I enjoyed teaching it tremendously. My sincere gratitude to everyone who has taken this course.
There is one minor mistake on this website. This course does have a final examination. One commentator remarked on the cluelessness of the exam. Let me explain. The exam requires you to use this course as a model to design a new GE course on other fundamental aspects of life, such as work, money, family and freedom. To get a good mark, you really need to remember the aim and content of every lecture of this course - otherwise how can you use this course as the basis for your course? As I told the aim of the lecture only during the lecture, you will need to attend the lectures in order to understand how each lecture is connected to one another and to the main objective of the course. In other words, the one-hour exam is a way to assess how much you got from the lectures - both by reviewing the materials and by attending them. This, by the way, is the purpose of all examinations.

Yun上堂其實唔悶, 上lecture 講既解其實好有趣, 上三個鐘唔會覺得點難過. 但係做assignment 果d 就要小心d. 其實唔係點樣先叫做係好...有小小覺得有d 有 bias.

唔洗Take attendance. assignment 量一般般, Yun好接受學生既意見.有人話太多野做佢就減少左一份. 但係exam就真係唔知做咩. 你可以話唔關lecture 事走哂佢都得, 因為上左都唔知exam 要點做先岩. marking criteria 完全唔清楚... 有d 伏既感覺

原本諗住mark非常繁重
不過諗諗下都係因為自己臨急抱佛腳
先好似好多野趕咁

呢一課計分嘅係presentation(x2)+article(guest lecture report)+reflection journal (at least 13)+exam
其餘唔計分叫你寫吓嘢(唔交扣分)嘅都有三四份

present通常得一個星期準備
不過呢一堂有長者學生
所以較多機會遇到鍾意打天才波嘅組員
article最主要都係睇progress
所以每一兩個星期交一份跟住佢comment改嘅article就ok
journal就hea好多
寫下你嗰堂/嗰短日子學到咩同死亡有關嘅嘢就ok
但因為量多
所以儲埋一日寫真係諗到頭都爆
因此最重要都係上堂或者問人講過啲咩
exam因為取消咗最後堂tutorial
所以題目就係嗰堂tutorial原定present條題目
所以可以prep

有心攞高分嘅可以揀
因為吹得水嚟又真係學到嘢
想hea攞高分就難啲

本來諗住揀個同科學冇咩關係既GE先讀依科
上堂係會用唔同角度睇死亡,幾好玩同輕鬆但有時悶
workload一般般啦:
Presentation兩次(最後一次因為有人話忙所以取消咗)
Reflection log13篇(一星期一篇)
Interview
Exam(同上堂內容冇咩關係)
原本諗住都有B range,但最後竟然C+ :(

其實workload 都幾大
不過呀Yun 好正 同埋個topic好有趣
好inspiring :D
唔知做咩又A- 左
只要present 個時interactive D + 平時問下野佢就近(Y)你
真係有野袋落袋!
