2019/20 Sem A

A-

A good choice for those without a science background. The only part that required you to thoroughly understand some science knowledge was the exam. Good communication skills, team spirit and proactiveness are necessary for this course. Do NOT take it if you cannot offer these qualities consistently throughout the semester.

The professor did not allow us to form groups on our own. He grouped students into a few large groups, which you would do some tasks together before you get to split into 2 smaller groups on your own. The tasks for the smaller group accounted for more marks so you will be fine as long as you make sure you find some reliable and hardworking groupmates in the large group. I was lucky that my small group were full of responsible and sensible people and I am sure this group contributed greatly to my good final grade.

The vibe in lectures is generally pleasant and not chur, but you do have to work hard and show your effort if you want a good grade. I did not regret the decision of taking this course coz it did bring me precious learning opportunities.

2019/20 Sem A

B+

2020-2021 sem A讀,area 3實在冇野簡得落手就reg左e科,據聞系近幾年新開。一開始超驚爛grade,但gpmate carry到同埋exam有B,好好彩冇爛到grade...我講下workload先。

5% participation:系canvas discussion隨便開個post講下廢話或者覆下其他人嘅po就有分,我都係google keywords然後copy paste hea覆其他人就算

20% gp project 1: 細組gp project,要搵一個諾貝爾獎得主嘅特質進行分析比較,完全唔知自己做緊咩,有d組搵家庭背景或者身高做topic,統計下數據然後整下圖表,唔洗寫report淨系present。一開始會有個唔計分嘅present比你試下professor水溫,之後先正式計分present。12月24號之前要交個revised ppt

25% gp project 2: 要搵個大學教授做guest lecture,topic要同當年得獎主題有關,例如chem系基因編輯,咁你就搵個研究過基因編輯嘅大學professor(最好本地啦)過黎講個基因編輯嘅talk。事前會分左你做某個category (econ chem medical etc.),之後你要由頭定learning goals, draft guest list,send email,安排個guest去city lecture hall或者zoom演講。我個組有整埋poster同開ig account宣傳。

5% question list: 每個prize category都要交10條問題,即系total交50條問題。之後professor會叫你系個excel file每個category投5條,然後email翻比佢。我自己個50條都係9吹,總之你有交就有分

15% personal reflection: 至少800字,title系 on greatness,你可以寫下點define greatness,得獎者又點體現到greatness,同埋我地點樣達致greatness。deadline之前可以交無限次,我resubmit左1次,最後個version一共4000幾字,總之改到佢話冇野可以補充就一定穩架啦

30% final exam: 30分MC考諾貝爾獎selection process,70分 long q,一條考諾貝爾獎得主成就,一條叫你講2個guest lecture嘅內容同得著(唔可以寫自己個組),一條問你諾貝爾獎公唔公平,會唔會埋沒左得獎者條team嘅人嘅credit。long q真係鬥吹水,吹得多就肯定高分架啦

e個course最痛苦嘅地方就系guideline超模糊,好多野都要你自己去摸索professor會唔會buy。project 1個陣收集數據入database真係好痛苦,完全唔知自己做嘅野有咩意義同埋做得岩唔岩... professor成日都話可以任你自由發揮但其實佢一早已經有個隱藏框架,你要做嘅就系滿足佢嘅隱藏框架。總之比佢feel到你好積極思考好積極參與就應該冇咩大問題 掛。仲有gp project進度要po 系discussion比professor睇,佢會track住你個進度。guest lecture盡量搵大學教授,我記得有一組話搵社企同埋補習老師?被professor插到飛起,話同nobel prize個得獎項目完全冇關係。

其實係19/20 Sem A讀但無得俾我揀
大致上同之前同學講既一樣,不過今年多左exam,要考諾貝爾獎得主生平同guest lecture內容
但由於停課關係最後exam都係取消左
呢科自由度好大,堂上基本上唔教書,主要靠canvas discussion自主學習
Area 3少有唔使science底都讀到既科

2017/18 Sem A

A

好有意義既一個Course
個Course主要係透過Nobel Prize去探討Human Greatness,最終係圍繞住一個問題 "What makes a person great?"
雖然係Area 3,但無理科底都完全唔需要擔心,唔會考同問有關理科既野
基本上成個course好free,可以學到同知道好多有關Nobel Prize既小知識,幾有趣
唔好走堂,會take attendance
Dr.Lam係一個好有諗法同好好人既教授,基本上同你係大學上既99% Course都唔同,佢自己都好強調this course is different from other courses
成個Course都冇powerpoint,主要都係聽prof.講有關nobel prize既野/睇片 or Present

Workload其實算輕鬆,今個Sem得22個人讀,所以變左5-6人一組,佢好鼓勵唔同department既同學一組,但又唔會強迫既,所以你想同fd一組都無問題

week1-4主要係講D關於Nobel Prize既知識同introduction
之後就做一個佔30%既Data Analysis Group Project
好Free,Topic自己揀,同Nobel Prize有關就得,例如係Nobel Prize winners既年齡analysis咁樣,唔難,有好多時間做,會有一堂唔計分俾每組Present一次個idea先,然後會由同學/Prof.比意見,之後先有堂計分既真Present。
真Present完仲可以再改,final write-up係考完試之後先交,好多時間慢慢改,仲可以無限次consult問完再改,唔洗打好多字,用返Present果份ppt改下就得

之後week 5 Mid term period因為2017既nobel winner仲未公佈,所以果個星期無堂,比我地可以自己溫書

到week 6就已經公佈左2017既nobel winner,每組就會assign到其中一個category黎做下一份group project,可以同其他組交換,之後就要開始準備成個course最重要既group project "Guest Lecture" ,要跟返assign左比你既category去邀請其他U/校內既教授做一個分享,會有幾個week準備而且Dr.Lam都會比足指引去教你點做,唔洗都唔洗太擔心,聽Dr.Lam話個Coruse搞左幾個sem都未試過有group請唔到guest黎講,呢個經驗好特別,其他course應該比唔到你

最後兩個week就係聽Guest Lecture

最後有份30%既1000字individual essay,題目係On Greatness,可以用中文/英文都得,又係完哂考試先deadline,好多時間做

總結一下有咩做
1. Take attendance
2. 細Group PJ(Data Analysis),輕鬆要求唔高
3. 大Group PJ (Guest Lecture),主要係負責邀請個Guest同主持個Lecture,大部份時間都係個Guest講,唔洗擔心
4. Individual Essay >1000 words 中英都得

當初都係其他GE Full哂先揀呢個,估唔到幾好Grade又幾有意義仲學到野,呢個course既experience其他course應該比唔到你,Dr.Lam都好有heart教,唔知點解之前會咁少人reg

2015/16 Sem A

这门课以诺贝尔奖为引入,研究的是how to be successful, how to learn, and what to learn. 老师提供的recommended readings都非常有趣且富有意义,但是,这些指导都比较抽象、不具体,导致学生们虽然大体上懂得该以什么样的态度和模式去学习,却不知道如何操作、如何实施;我学到了理念,却不懂得方法。这也是这门课作为一门新的GE应该改进的地方。
此外,这门课的任务主要是一个small group project 和一个big group project. Small group project 围绕数据分析展开,由学生自主选择研究对象(与诺贝尔奖得主有关)。 特点为自由度大,是一个非常好的研究数据、分析数据的机会。Big group project主题为guest lecture, 在了解了今年的诺贝尔奖得主后,从他们的发明或经历中寻找project topic 和自己想知道的知识;以此为基础,利用一切可能的方式去获取知识,例如guest lecture, research. 最后将这一过程中的所学所感记录下来,亦是受益匪浅。
总之,作为一门新的GE课,存在不足之处是正常的,而且Dr.Lam也一直帮助学生去克服课程设置不合理所带来的麻烦。因此,上这门课可谓一番历练。

2015/16 Sem A

A-

整體黎講, 成科好自由, 不論individual/group project基本上都係自由發揮。其實Dr. Lam係個好有諗法既tutor, 但係始終香港學生比較鍾意跟guidelines工作, 所以好多時師生之間出現左個gap, 所以學生未必跟得上課堂節奏。呢個course其實不大問題, 只係big group project真係好大組人做, 所以好容易有freeriders.
